UniTTe Workshop 2016

Project partners and members of the advisory board have presented last development, experience and challenges of using nacelle lidars for wind turbine power performance measurement and loads assessment.

Power performance verification is nowadays mainly required for new types of wind turbine (e.g. very large offshore.turbines) and challenging environment (e.g. complex terrain). Nacelle lidars are already broadly used for power performance verification offshore as it reduces significantly the cost compared to erecting a met mast for this purpose. There is however a need to increase the investors’ confidence in these new type of measurements to be able to substitute met masts. This raises the need for a standard especially to have a common understanding of the uncertainties.

Avoiding the use of met mast raises other questions such as the local measurement of other wind characteristics such  as shear, veer and turbulence required for full characterisation of the turbine power and loads.

Power performance verification in complex terrain needs a new approach which would overcome the main issue of the current method relating wind speed measured at 2.5D upstream to the wind speed at the turbine position.

The UniTTe project is addressing those challenges through:

  • the development of a power performance verification method based on short range nacelle lidar measurements in order have a better estimate of the wind at the turbine position (free wind)
  • the characterisation of the induction zone with a simple model
  • derivation of turbulence characteristics from nacelle lidars;
  • implementation and evaluation of loads assessment based on nacelle lidar measurements instead of met mast measurements.
